Intention and Meditation

Every Transformation Begins with an Intention

Every dream and every undertaking begins with your intention.

To move towards our dreams and desires, we must first form an intention that is clear, concise, specific and sincere.

Intention determines our direction, attention gathers our energy around that direction, and conscious action makes our intention visible in daily life.

The Meaning of Intention

Intention Is More Than a Wish

The first step, intention, is the beginning of everything.

An intention is more than a wish that we hope will come true in the future. It is a conscious decision about where we will direct our attention, time, energy and behaviour.

The power of an intention lies not only in the sentence we create, but also in how sincerely we connect with it and how we shape our life in accordance with it.

Three Essential Steps

Intention, Attention and Manifestation

In interpretations of Vedic teaching, the process of bringing an intention into life is often considered through three complementary concepts.

Intention

1. Intention

Clearly identifying what we want and the direction in which we wish to move.

Attention

2. Attention

Directing our mental energy and time towards the areas that support our intention.

Manifestation

3. Manifestation

Making our intention visible through our choices, habits and conscious actions.

Sincere and Clear

How Should an Intention Be Formed?

The way we form an intention is important. An intention arising from a sincere and honest heart carries a distinctive energy.

An effective intention should be clear, simple, positive and, as far as possible, within our own sphere of influence.

Rather than creating an intention that attempts to determine how another person should behave, we can focus on our own choices, behaviour and the qualities we wish to develop.

Keep Your Intention Within Your Sphere of Influence

Instead of saying, “I want everyone around me to value me,” say:

“I intend to recognise my own value, express my needs clearly and build healthy relationships.”

Attention and Action

Is Intention Alone Enough?

First, we form an intention. We then direct our attention towards what we would like to bring into our life. Attention influences where our energy flows.

Directing this flow means engaging each day in conscious actions related to our intention and regularly setting aside meaningful time for what supports our goal.

Manifestation is not simply thinking about a desired result. It means supporting that thought with choices, habits and behaviour.

Intention

Determines the direction in which we will move.

Attention

Gathers our energy within the area we have chosen.

Action

Carries our intention into daily life.

Intention is the field of infinite possibilities.

Attention is energy.

Meditation

Why Do We Set an Intention Before Meditation?

Declaring an intention before meditation can help us establish the direction of the practice.

Even without a specific intention, meditation may support mental and physical relaxation, bring attention back to the present moment and help us respond to stress more consciously.

An intention formed at the beginning of meditation, however, connects the practice with our personal journey of transformation. It reminds us why we are sitting and which quality we wish to carry into daily life after the practice.

Intentions You Can Use Before Meditation

Calmness

I intend to approach the situations I encounter today with calmness and clarity.

Self-Compassion

I intend to be more understanding and compassionate towards myself.

Awareness

I intend to notice the messages communicated by my body, mind and emotions.

Conscious Choice

I intend to take at least one conscious step today that supports my goal.

The relationship between meditation, the brain and awareness
The Brain’s Capacity for Change

The Brain’s Capacity to Bring Change into Life

First, I recommend trusting in your brain’s capacity to develop and change.

Thoughts such as “I cannot do this,” “I cannot change” or “My mind is not suited to meditation” can create invisible limitations before we have even begun.

Regular meditation and controlled, rhythmic breathing practices may help us create a small space of awareness between ourselves and our thoughts, emotions and automatic reactions.

From Automatic Reactions to Conscious Choices

As this space of awareness grows, our ability to make healthier and more conscious choices may also strengthen, rather than allowing old habits to determine every response.

Believing that change is possible does not guarantee a particular result. However, being completely convinced that change is impossible can weaken our willingness to try and our ability to sustain consistent effort.

Do You Need to Believe in Meditation to Benefit from It?

Whether or not you already believe in meditation practices, you can observe their effects through your own experience when they are practised correctly and regularly.

Meditation is less an abstract idea that must be believed and more a method of awareness experienced through regular practice.

The Silence Beyond the Mind

Meditation helps us notice the mind’s constant tendency to think, compare, judge and become agitated.

The aim is not to silence the mind by force, but to learn to observe thoughts without immediately identifying with them.

Regular practice may reconnect us with the tranquillity, peace and creativity beyond the noise of the mind. In this way, we can gradually develop a closer relationship with our essential self.

A practice for setting an intention before meditation
Practice

Intention Meditation Practice

You can use this short practice at the beginning of the day, before an important decision or at the start of your daily meditation.

The purpose is not only to create a beautiful sentence, but to connect your intention with a small and specific action that you will take during the day.

Step by Step

How to Practise Intention Meditation

1. Find a Comfortable Posture

Sit with your spine naturally upright. Rest your hands comfortably on your knees or in your lap.

2. Bring Your Attention to Your Breath

Take a few natural and calm breaths through your nose. Without forcing the breath, observe the movement it creates within your body.

3. Recognise What You Need

Silently ask yourself, “Which quality do I need in my life today?”

4. Simplify Your Intention

Express your intention in one short, positive sentence that remains within your own sphere of influence.

5. Repeat Your Intention

Repeat the sentence silently three times, without rushing, while connecting with its meaning.

6. Move into Silence

Without trying to repeat the intention continuously in your mind, remain with your breath and silence for a few minutes.

7. Choose One Action

Before opening your eyes, choose one small and specific action that will support your intention today.

Bring Your Intention into Daily Life

The intention we establish during meditation should not remain only a beautiful sentence remembered while our eyes are closed.

The real practice begins when we open our eyes and return to daily life. The power of intention becomes visible in our decisions, the way we use our time and the small behaviours we repeatedly choose.

When your attention becomes distracted during the day or you notice yourself returning to an old habit, do not judge yourself.

Simply remember your intention and gently redirect your attention towards the direction you have chosen.
